Why Chrome Can Turn a Good Laptop Into a Slideshow
During finals week, I was prepping my laptops for proctoring — something I’ve done dozens of times. But this time, I ran into a problem that reminded me why even a “simple” browser install can tank a machine.
I started with an Ideapad 330 running Windows 11. Historically, this laptop has struggled during proctored exams. It’s not broken, it’s just slow. I did the usual fixes:
- Disabled hardware acceleration
- Disabled “Continue running background apps”
- Cleaned startup apps
Normally, these tweaks help low‑end machines with limited RAM. But not this time. Chrome and Edge both crawled.
So I switched to a backup: a Lenovo S145, freshly reinstalled with Windows 10, which was pretty fast.
Until I installed Google Chrome.
The moment Chrome launched, the laptop slowed way down and CPU and memory spiked, causing so much lag. It took nearly 10 minutes just to uninstall Chrome because the system was so bogged down. Once Chrome was gone, the laptop ran perfectly again — and I completed my proctored exam in Edge without a single hiccup.
Why This Happens
Chrome is great on mid‑range and high‑end machines. But on low‑RAM systems (4 GB or less), especially older Lenovo budget models, Chrome’s first‑run behavior is brutal:
- Syncing bookmarks, passwords, extensions
- Rebuilding its profile
- Running its own indexer
- Downloading WebView components
- Triggering Windows Search indexing at the same time
This creates a perfect storm of disk thrashing and memory pressure. Edge doesn’t do this because it’s already integrated into Windows; no massive sync storm, no profile rebuild, no heavy background tasks.
The Takeaway
If your computer suddenly becomes unusably slow after installing Chrome — especially on older or low‑RAM machines — Chrome might be the culprit, not your hardware.
For proctored exams, business use, or older laptops, Edge is often the better choice. It’s lighter, faster, and doesn’t overwhelm the system.
Chrome isn’t “bad.” It’s just heavy. And on certain machines, heavy is enough to break everything.
